A Second Look at Stockholm
Returning to Stockholm in the summer of 2023 felt like meeting an old friend after a long absence. Living there allowed me to explore beyond the tourist spots and delve into the city’s deeper layers. I wanted to truly understand what makes Stockholm unique, not just as a physical place but as a source of inspiration.

I began my days walking through the city with no set destination, letting the environment guide me. The architecture — geometric, functional, touched with Scandinavian restraint — revealed hints of something more beneath its clean lines and muted tones. This rediscovery was essential for me as a type designer; I needed to immerse myself fully, not just observe from a distance. I aimed to capture Stockholm’s essence — the subtle interplay of strict and playful, structured and spontaneous, beyond just the obvious.

This process was a journey of peeling back layers, letting the city reveal itself in unexpected ways. It laid the foundation for SFT Schrifted Serif. By fully embracing the city, I set the stage for the romantic and baroque elements that would shape the design.
Finding the Romantic Side of a Rational City
As I continued to explore Stockholm, I started to notice a softer, more romantic side beneath its rational exterior. The city is known for its clean, minimalist design and functional architecture, but there were moments of unexpected charm that caught my eye. It wasn’t just about the grand historical buildings or obvious landmarks; it was in the small, quiet details — the subtle curves of baroque swirls on a facade, pastel tones softly breaking through the neutral palette, and the cozy atmosphere of hidden courtyards and narrow alleys.

This romantic side wasn’t immediately apparent, but the more I looked, the more I saw how these elements subtly infused the city’s visual language. They added warmth and softness to the otherwise stark and orderly environment. It was like discovering the human touch within the structured, finding the personality and soul within the formality. I found myself drawn to these contrasts, seeing them as metaphors for the city’s dual nature — hard yet inviting, structured yet organic.

I was particularly captivated by how the local scandinavian nature mirrored this duality. The rocky landscapes, cold and solid, were interspersed with delicate ferns and mosses, creating a contrast that felt both striking and harmonious. This juxtaposition of harsh stone with soft, living elements was a visual representation of what I wanted to capture in SFT Schrifted Serif. I envisioned a typeface that, much like the city, balanced these opposites — a design grounded in rational geometry but softened by organic details.

As I sketched, these inspirations began to take form. I incorporated teardrop shapes reminiscent of leaves or droplets of dew, bringing a sense of life and fluidity to the letters. Rounded forms paired with these organic elements lent the typeface a baroque quality, while slight slants in the ovals added a subtle, lively character.

This journey of discovery wasn’t just about replicating what I saw; it was about translating the city’s essence into something tangible — a typeface that could embody the spirit of Stockholm in every curve and line.

Crafting the Details
Turning the essence of Stockholm into a typeface required translating my observations into tangible design choices. For SFT Schrifted Serif, every element was carefully considered to reflect the city’s nuanced character.

1. One of the key features I focused on was the inclusion of organic teardrop shapes. These aren’t just decorative; they serve to soften the geometric foundation of the typeface, introducing a natural fluidity that contrasts with its structural base.

2. Another critical aspect was the slight tilt of the oval axes, designed to subtly inject a sense of movement and energy into the typeface. I wanted SFT Schrifted Serif to feel dynamic and vibrant. This gentle tilt adds a touch of forward momentum, capturing the city’s vibrant spirit without compromising the overall sense of balance and order.

3. A dynamic variation in stroke thickness adds further expressiveness and energy to the typeface. The fluid shifts between thick and thin strokes create a sense of motion and vitality, enhancing the typeface’s dynamic character. Additionally, the pronounced thin segments in the strokes bring a crisp, ringing clarity, lending SFT Schrifted Serif a refined precision that echoes the clean aesthetics of Stockholm.

4. The expressive italics of SFT Schrifted Serif became a playground for showcasing the typeface’s most fluid and dynamic aspects. I leaned into the idea of motion and adaptability, crafting italics that feel almost like they are dancing across the page. This approach allowed me to highlight the more expressive side of the typeface, creating a contrast with the upright styles while still maintaining a coherent identity.

Every choice in SFT Schrifted Serif was made to create a typeface that feels both familiar and fresh — a nod to classic serif traditions with a distinctly contemporary twist. By integrating these thoughtful details, I aimed to capture a typeface that, much like Stockholm, invites viewers to look a little closer.
1. Organic Teardrop Shapes: Soften the geometric structure with natural fluidity. 2. Slight Tilt of Ovals: Adds subtle movement and vibrancy to the typeface. 3. Dynamic Stroke Variation: Enhances expressiveness and clarity with varying thickness. 4. Expressive Italics: Emphasize fluidity and contrast with dynamic, lively forms.

Bringing Serif Back to the Forefront
Serif typefaces have always had a prominent place in the world of typography, traditionally associated with classic and formal uses like books, magazines, and luxury branding. However, in recent years, there’s been a noticeable shift — serifs are making a comeback in unexpected and contemporary settings. This resurgence is something I found particularly inspiring while living in Sweden, where serifs were boldly breaking out of their conventional roles.

In Stockholm, I was struck by the versatility of serif typefaces in everyday life. They weren’t just confined to high-end applications; I saw them on everything from egg cartons to frozen vegetable packaging, on websites for tech companies, and even on banners covering construction sites. These instances felt fresh, stylish, and memorable, challenging the conventional wisdom that sans serifs are the default for modern, minimalistic design. It was a bold statement that resonated with me: serifs can be just as modern, relevant, and impactful when used thoughtfully.
In Sweden, serifs break free from traditional uses, appearing on everything from theater posters and juice cartons to egg packaging and construction banners. This fresh and stylish approach challenges the norm, proving that serifs can be modern, relevant, and impactful in unexpected contexts.

This trend of embracing serifs in diverse contexts was a significant driving force behind the creation of SFT Schrifted Serif. I wanted to design a typeface that could transcend traditional boundaries and thrive in both expected and surprising environments. SFT Schrifted Serif, with its blend of structured geometry and organic details, was crafted to be adaptable — to feel equally at home in a luxury magazine as on a contemporary digital interface. It’s this flexibility that I believe makes it so relevant today.

The appeal of serifs lies not just in their aesthetic qualities but in their ability to convey a sense of personality and depth. Where sans serifs offer clarity and simplicity, serifs bring a touch of the human hand, a sense of history, and a connection to tradition. They have the power to make a brand or a design feel more approachable, more grounded. This human touch was precisely what I aimed to capture in SFT Schrifted Serif — it’s a typeface that communicates with warmth and sophistication.
A Puzzle That Came Together in Scandinavia
The creation of SFT Schrifted Serif was like solving a puzzle that only came together when I returned to Stockholm. Before my trip, I had sketched concepts for the serif companion to SFT Schrifted Sans, but none of them fully captured the essence I was seeking. It wasn’t until I was back, that the design truly began to take shape.
1. Early Sketch: One of the initial drafts for SFT Schrifted Serif, showing an early direction before refining the design. 2. Final Version: The fully developed typeface, shaped by the influence of Stockholm. The early concept evolved into a design that better captures the intended character and essence, illustrating the transformation of ideas along the journey.

In Stockholm, everything clicked. The environment acted as a catalyst, guiding the design process in ways I couldn’t have anticipated. Baroque swirls, organic curves, and dynamic italics found their place naturally, reflecting the rhythm and texture of the city itself.

Being in Stockholm was essential; it brought a depth and authenticity to SFT Schrifted Serif that I couldn’t have achieved elsewhere. This experience underscored the importance of context in design and how profoundly a place can shape creative work. SFT Schrifted Serif became more than a typeface — it became a reflection of a journey completed, a puzzle solved by the very environment that inspired it.
